We all know that exercise can be beneficial for both body and mind, but what exercises should we be doing for maximum all-round health? 'Pilates' says Neil Johnson - fitness expert and celebrity trainer.
"Pilates is an exercise system that can be used to rehabilitate injury, provide strength, flexibility and balance, tone muscles, improve posture, provide stress relief as well as relieve aching backs and necks.
In essence Pilates is a fantastic compliment for elite athletes and nearly all professional ballet and contemporary dancers include Pilates into their daily routine. Johnson, former backing dancer for the likes of Take That and Boyzone has a great deal of experience in many areas of fitness, but has a real passion for Pilates and the benefits it brings him and his celebrity clients "My Pilates programme aims to increase body strength and tone, working with your own body weight which after all is what we work with on a day to day basis."
"Through his experience as a dancer he says there is nothing more liberating than to be in control of your body. Pilates works for people of all of ages, regardless of their weight or level of fitness. Modern living means that most people sit for long periods throughout the day, which throws the muscular-skeletal system out of balance. Through Pilates you can restore the imbalance that can happen from sitting down with poor posture. Pilates is also beneficial for pre-natal and post-natal women as well as being suitable for people with medical conditions such as arthritis, scoliosis, osteoporosis and multiple sclerosis.
Essentially Pilates can be modified to suit individual needs of the participant. Ultimately Pilates elongates, strengthens and restores the body to balance and is based on an anatomical understanding of the body's muscular and skeletal systems, which re-educates and restores the body to its optimum muscular and skeletal function.
